Ramadan is a month of spiritual reflection, fasting, and prayer for Muslims around the world. However, it can be difficult to celebrate this sacred month in space, where the concept of day and night doesn’t exist. Astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, the first Emirati astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), faced this unique challenge during his time on the ISS in 2019.
Astronaut Sultan Alneyadi: Celebrating Ramadan in Space
Alneyadi made history when he traveled to the ISS as part of the UAE’s space program. It was a moment of pride for the nation, as he became the first Emirati astronaut to visit the space station. However, it was also a challenging time for him, as he had to celebrate Ramadan in space. Alneyadi fasted for 16 hours every day, just like every other Muslim on Earth. However, he had to adjust his schedule based on the sunrise and sunset times of Mecca, the holiest city in Islam. He also had to adjust his prayers according to the position of the ISS in space.
Fasting, Praying, and Experimenting: A Unique Ramadan Experience on the ISS
Alneyadi had a unique opportunity to celebrate Ramadan in space, which he used to the fullest. Apart from fasting and praying, he also conducted some interesting experiments during this time. He grew plants in the microgravity environment of the ISS and experimented with different methods of watering them. He also studied the effects of fasting on the human body in space, which could have implications for future space travel. Alneyadi even hosted a live call with students from his alma mater, the Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, where he shared his experiences of Ramadan in space.
Despite the challenges, Alneyadi managed to celebrate Ramadan in space with dedication and perseverance. His unique experience has not only inspired Muslims around the world, but also contributed to the scientific exploration of space. We can only imagine what future Ramadan celebrations in space will look like, but Alneyadi has certainly set a high bar for future astronauts to follow.
