Cricket is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. It is played all over the world, with the most popular countries being Australia, England, India, and South Africa. However, if you’re new to the game, it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this beginner’s guide that will give you a solid foundation in the basics of cricket.
What is Cricket and How is it Played?
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score more runs than the other team. The game is played on a circular or oval-shaped field with a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch in the center.
The team batting first tries to score as many runs as possible in their allotted overs (a set number of deliveries). The team bowling tries to get the batting team’s players out by hitting the wickets with the ball, catching the ball in the air, or making the batsman hit the ball in the air to a fielder.
A Beginner’s Guide to the Rules and Basic Skills
The game of cricket has many rules, but here are some of the most important ones for beginners:
-
The batting team can score runs by hitting the ball and running to the other end of the pitch. If the ball goes to the boundary (edges of the field), the batting team scores four runs. If the ball goes over the boundary without touching the ground, the batting team scores six runs.
-
The bowler has to bowl the ball within a marked-out rectangular area at the end of the pitch. If the ball is bowled outside this area, it is called a no-ball, and the batting team gets an extra run. If the ball bounces more than once before reaching the batsman, it is called a dead ball.
-
The fielding team has to try and get the batsman out by catching the ball or hitting the wickets with the ball. If the ball hits the batsman’s body and would have gone on to hit the wickets, the batsman is out lbw (leg before wicket).
Some basic skills you’ll need to play cricket are batting, bowling, and fielding. Batting involves hitting the ball with the bat, while bowling involves delivering the ball to the batsman. Fielding involves trying to stop the ball and get the batsman out.
With this beginner’s guide, you now have a basic understanding of cricket and its rules. The best way to learn more is to watch a game or get out on the field and play. Keep practicing your skills, and you’ll soon be able to enjoy this exciting and rewarding sport.
