In sports, injuries are an all-too-common occurrence. However, when they happen to a player on the opposing team, it can still be a heartbreaking moment for everyone involved. This was the case when Colorado Rockies pitcher Daniel Bard threw a pitch that struck Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, resulting in an injury. Bard has since expressed regret over the incident, and his former teammate has also spoken out on the situation.
Daniel Bard Expresses Regret Over Jose Altuve’s Injury
On August 15, 2021, the Colorado Rockies were facing off against the Houston Astros when Bard threw a pitch that struck Altuve in the left arm. The impact resulted in a contusion and forced Altuve to leave the game. In an interview following the incident, Bard expressed his regret over what had happened. He stated, "I’m sorry for what happened; I never intended for anyone to get hurt." Bard went on to explain that he had been trying to throw a fastball inside, but it had gotten away from him.
Former Teammate Speaks Out on Altuve’s Misfortune
Bard’s former teammate, Tim Wakefield, also spoke out on the situation. Wakefield, who played for the Boston Red Sox for 17 seasons, was a mentor to Bard during his time on the team. In an interview with NBC Sports Boston, Wakefield expressed sympathy for Altuve and his injury. He stated, "It’s a shame when anybody gets hit, especially when somebody of his caliber gets hit." Wakefield also acknowledged the difficulty that pitchers face when trying to throw inside to batters, saying, "We’re trying to pitch inside, but sometimes things happen."
Injuries are a part of sports, but that doesn’t make them any less difficult to deal with. Bard’s regret over Altuve’s injury, as well as Wakefield’s sympathy, highlights the importance of sportsmanship and respect for one’s opponents. While the incident was undoubtedly unfortunate, it serves as a reminder that even in competition, there is a human element to sports that should never be forgotten.
